Future Travel

Seven Magic Mountains | Las Vegas (01.2020)

There are many places to which I would like to travel; here is a brief list, in no particular order.

  • Alaska: this trip was scheduled for spring-summer 2020, obviously impacted by COVID | ferry from Seattle (with car), ferry to Dutch Harbor (without car), Denali National Park, drive Dalton Highway to Deadhorse, swim in Arctic Ocean, drive Alaska-Canada Highway (ALCAN), drive Trans-Canada Highway 1.
  • Central America: fly to Panama, and then local bus service north to Mexico; was planning to visit in January 2022, but with current COVID conditions, this may not be reasonable
  • Eastern Canada: regret not visiting the eastern provinces when I lived and worked in Ottawa | road trip to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, ferry to Newfoundland and Labrador, Trans-Labrador Highway
  • Churchill MB: see beluga whales, polar bears, northern lights | two-day train (via Rail) from Winnipeg MB to Hudson Bay
  • Nepal-Tibet: take the train from China to Tibet, highest train in the world at 5,000 feet above sea level; bus service from Nepal to India
  • Greece & Turkey: despite my discomfort watching Midnight Express as a teenager
  • Cairo to Capetown: via train (mostly) | inspired by author Paul Theroux’s “Dark Star Safari”
  • Australia: visited Australia (Darwin, Perth) while stationed in Okinawa Japan | given my interest in train journeys, would like to travel on Indian Pacific Railroad (Perth to Sydney) | Ghan Railroad (Adelaide to Darwin), and also visit New Zealand
  • Southeast Asia: island hopping and train travel along the peninsula
  • South America & Antarctica: would like to visit Antarctica via reinforced cruise ship, which depart from Ushuaia, Argentina; not an inexpensive trip. Upon return, would travel through South America; it’s a large and diverse continent, and unsure how to address the logistics
  • Japan: freighter from United States | explore the country via train | ferry to Okinawa
  • Europe: traveled to Europe for business; likely visit when I’m “older” and less daring
  • India: traveled to India in 2011; would like to return despite the challenges
  • Scandinavian Europe
  • Iceland & Greenland
